Anna Clyne is…

So Hot Right Now

March 2025

Anna Clyne is the featured composer of the seventh So Hot Right Now series. Rosette will perform her music six times in six different venues during the month of March in Richmond, Virginia.

Anna Clyne

Described as a “composer of uncommon gifts and unusual methods” by the New York Times and as “fearless” by NPR, GRAMMY-nominated Anna Clyne is one of the most in-demand composers today, working with orchestras, choreographers, filmmakers, and visual artists around the world. Her cello concerto DANCE, recorded by soloist Inbal Segev, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and Marin Alsop, has garnered over 11 million plays on Spotify. Born in London in 1980, Anna Clyne has lived in the US for over 20 years and recently became an American citizen.

The program

Woman Holding A Balance (2020)

Breathing Statues (2020)

Rosette will perform the same two pieces by Anna Clyne at each of their six performances in March. The first, called Woman Holding A Balance, was written for a short film by the same name about a minimalist sculpture by Jyll Bradley called “Dutch/Light.” The music itself is minimalist and evokes the sculpture’s colorful, geometric shadows which slowly shift as the sun crosses the sky. The film is named after the painting by Johannes Vermeer (below).

The title of the second piece, Breathing Statues, comes from a poem by Rainer Maria Rilke which begins, “Music: the breathing of statues.” This 20-minute work takes motives from Beethoven’s late string quartets (op. 130, 133, and 135) and recasts them in a way that is both strange and delicious to the modern ear.
